Conformity

This photo was taken in Trinidad, Cuba 2006.This shot is dominated by the natural cohesion of colours presented throughout the frame. I was immediately struck by the coincidental nature of this colour scheme and felt it would make a strong statement around the idea and expectation of social conformity in Cuba. The shot captures natural poses of both the man and woman, helping to attain a sense of everyday street life.

This photo was taken in Havana, Cuba 2006. I was fascinated by the colour symmetry and balance achieved in this particular frame. The photo makes a bold statement about the socioeconomic, cultural and political nuances of everyday life in Cuba. The flag, a strong and potent symbol of freedom and independence from outside influence. The Cuban Lady, dressed in the colours of the Cuban flag, represents the real life manifestation of Cuban nationalism. The decaying wall, ridden with propaganda and graffiti helps to underscore the gulf between the ideals propagated by nationalistic rhetoric and the nature of everyday life on the streets of Cuba.
